Dr.Hilary Moorby was born in Longton, one of the 5 towns that make up Stoke on Trent in 1934. She went to Manchester University to get a B.Sc. in Botany and met Jeff there. They were married soon after they graduated in 1956. Having travelled extensively in their early marriage following Jeff’s career they settled in Oxfordshire where Hilary registered for a D. Phil prior to moving in 1986 to Smithfield Farmhouse in Kingsnorth where she and Jeff lived for 31 years. She maintained her link to Oxford but worked as a Research Fellow at Wye for about 10 years.
