The purpose of this letter is to update you on the next steps for the M20 J3 (West Malling) – J5 (Aylesford) smart motorway.
New Dates: M20 Weekend Closure J4-6 and J7 Westbound Entry Slip: 10pm Fri 16 Nov to 6am Mon 19 Nov 2018

The full weekend closure of the M20 J4-6 and J7 Westbound entry slip for the installation of Teapot Lane Footbridge has been moved to Friday November 16 10pm through to Monday November 19 6am. This is due to concerns that our works would disrupt the WW1
centenary Remembrance Day events.

Following the demolition of Teapot Lane Footbridge in September, we now need to install the new, slightly higher footbridge deck.

The local approved diversion route of the A228/M2/A229 is included on the scheme website. The long-distance diversion route will be signposted on the M25 and elsewhere as the A2/M2. In response to learnings from September’s closure, we are also closing the M20 J7 westbound entry slip to avoid the severe congestion in this area.

As previously, we will publicise the closures through local media, letters and leaflets as well as signs across the south east road network

Removing Gantries
Starting in early November, we will be removing some gantries. This work will involve overnight closures of the M20 between J2 (Wrotham) and J4 on some nights and J4 and J6 on other nights. We will be updating our website with closure dates. New gantries are due to be installed in early 2019.

Piling Works for New Gantries
To prepare for the installation of 27 new gantries across the scheme, we will be starting piling work at the end of October. We are using techniques that reduce the noise impact on our scheme neighbours. The new gantries will provide information on variable speed limits and lane closures as well as directional signage.

Renewing Lighting M26/M20 Junction
Between October and the end of the year we are modernising the lighting at the M26/M20 Junction by installing new LED lights. These better target light onto the motorway, produce less light pollution and are 50% more energy efficient than the sodium version. Temporary lighting will be in place whilst we do this work.
